UK Wire Hater Gets Smacked Down...

Postby Latingrrl » Thu Jul 26, 2007 4:19 pm

Only have a minute here today, but I had to post this, and hopefully I'm not sharing something that's already been discussed ad nauseam elsewhere...

I'm a faithful reader of a British newspaper called The Guardian. In the past few days, it's been all abuzz with talk of The Wire, stemming from an opinion column in which it was stated, basically, that The Wire sucks on every level that it is possible to suck on, and which declared that most of its fans are 'middle-aged white males'. Um, EXCUSE ME? Well, don't worry - the Wireheads, UK and otherwise, swooped down in force to give the columnist what fer. Read:

In response, another columnist was moved by all the Wirehead passion to give the show a try, and...he likes it. Though I'm a bit fuzzy as to why he felt he should be titillated by girl on girl action, but 'mildly disgusted' at BLACK girl on girl action? I'm sure he'll be called upon to 'splain himself...

The Wire's Omar: UK shows me love

(UKPA) – 2 days ago

The Wire's Michael K Williams has revealed he is desperate to come to the UK to meet his British fans.

Speaking in Hollywood, the actor - who plays Omar in the crime drama - said: "It's crazy, the UK has been showing me a lot of love!"

He added: "I can't wait to get out there and walk about the streets."

Michael, who was speaking at the premiere of his new film The Road, insists admirers of the show's renowned stick-up man aren't odd.

"It's nothing strange, it's love, that's what I call it, it's humbling," he said. "This Halloween I got a pumpkin carved out as my character Omar's likeness, that's a little scary, but cool."

He added: "It never stops, I feel like The Wire response has grown since the show ended."

But, surprisingly, Michael's No 1 fan - his mum - is yet to watch The Wire.

He explained: "I don't come from a show business family. They're very conservative people, Caribbean and West Indian based. My mum, she doesn't even watch The Wire but she's like 'ok son, whatever you're doing keep it up!' - she gives me a little thumbs up every now and then."

Very interesting spekky...

It was astonishing how much ink The Wire got from The Guardian. It got to the point where the paper's readers bitched about how much coverage there was -- complaining in the comments sections of various columns, 'we love the show, but enough already!'. I don't know what kind of ratings it got, though -- if it was a mainstream hit or remained a 'cult' thing as it was here.

Hi Lg,

This is probably unrelated, "and yet", in the UK version of the poster for some recent Vince VAughn movie, the black couple was removed from the original version. Huh, what?

I heard about that poster thing too, spekky. A true WTF moment indeed.

It's always depressing to be confronted with evidence that progress hasn't progressed as far as we need it to.
